Introduction
A practical introduction to the city from the water, with routes worth taking and neighbourhoods worth arriving in.
A ferry is one of the most enjoyable ways to begin understanding Istanbul. The waterfront falls into place as you move away from it: the historic peninsula on one side, the slopes above Karaköy on another, and the Asian shore ahead. Around you, passengers are making an ordinary journey through a city that happens to offer an extraordinary view.
For a first crossing, take a public ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy to Kadıköy, then give the neighbourhood some time. The market streets, lunch and a walk towards Moda turn the ride into a satisfying outing. If Üsküdar or Beşiktaş fits your plans better, there are equally good reasons to start there.
This guide focuses on Şehir Hatları, the municipal ferry operator, so the routes, piers and timetable links belong to the same network.
Choose your first crossing
Eminönü or Karaköy to Kadıköy
This is our first choice for combining the view with somewhere interesting to spend the next few hours. Eminönü suits a start around the historic peninsula and Sirkeci; Karaköy works well after exploring Galata or the streets closer to the waterfront.
The service appears as Kadıköy-Karaköy-Eminönü on the operator’s website. Read the departure column for the pier where you will actually board, including its footnotes. A route name alone does not mean every departure calls at every pier.
In Kadıköy, the market streets make a natural first wander. Food shops give you plenty to look at before choosing lunch. From there, Bahariye leads towards Moda, where a café or time by the water can round out the visit. You can keep the afternoon compact or let it grow without needing another major attraction.

Eminönü to Üsküdar
Choose Üsküdar when the waterfront itself is the main attraction. Arrival places you beside a lively square and the neighbourhood’s mosque architecture, with the European shore still very much part of the view. Tea and a walk along the shore can be enough of a plan.
The listed route is Üsküdar-Karaköy-Eminönü. Some sailings omit Karaköy, so anyone starting there should check that specific column rather than borrow an Eminönü departure time. If you visit a working mosque after arrival, allow for prayer times and appropriate clothing.

Beşiktaş to Kadıköy
This is a useful choice if you are already around Beşiktaş. Have breakfast or explore the market streets, then cross to Kadıköy for the next part of the day. It saves making a special journey to Eminönü simply to take a ferry.
The same idea works in reverse: a Kadıköy morning can lead into an afternoon in Beşiktaş. Choose the destination that interests you and check the return separately.

A public ferry or a Bosphorus cruise
An ordinary crossing carries you between neighbourhoods. It offers the pleasure of the water as part of getting somewhere, with the rest of the outing taking place ashore. The Kadıköy routes above are especially good for this. They do not travel the length of the Bosphorus.
A sightseeing cruise makes the journey itself the main event. Şehir Hatları lists both a Short Bosphorus Tour and a Long Bosphorus Tour. The long tour reaches Anadolu Kavağı and includes a substantial stop there; check the full outward and return schedule before committing the day. Official information ↗ · Official information ↗
These tours have a separate fare schedule, including a foreign-passenger column. Check the official tour tariff and the ticket arrangements for your chosen tour. Do not budget for a sightseeing tour using the ordinary crossing fare. Official information ↗
For a first visit, the decision is simple: choose Kadıköy for a ferry ride followed by neighbourhood exploring, or choose a Bosphorus tour when you want to devote more of the outing to seeing the shores from the water.
Finding the right pier
İskele means pier; kalkış means departure. Keep the Turkish spelling of your destination handy, especially Kadıköy, Karaköy and Üsküdar.
At Eminönü, the operator’s pier page lists several separate pier locations. Head for the Şehir Hatları departure serving your destination, then check the board before joining a queue. A waterfront name on a map may get you to the right area without getting you to the right entrance.

Before paying, confirm three things: the operator, the destination and the next departure. The timetable and pier signs should agree. If they do not, ask a member of staff. Allow a little room to find your way rather than arriving as boarding closes.

Tickets and payment for visitors
İstanbulkart is a practical option if you will use public transport more than once. The city’s official visitor guidance confirms that visitors can buy and top up cards at BELBİM-branded machines or sales representatives, and use them on public ferries. The card purchase and travel balance are separate; load what you expect to use rather than assuming leftover money will be refunded. Official information ↗
The same guidance lists limited-pass tickets and visitors’ own contactless credit or debit cards as alternatives, including on ferries. Check the reader’s accepted-payment signs and have another option available: this is not a guarantee for every foreign-issued card or phone wallet.
İstanbul City Card is a separate, time-based visitor product. Compare its cost with the journeys you expect to make before choosing it for a single crossing.
For the crossing itself, use Şehir Hatları’s current ferry fares. Fares vary by route, and that page’s main prices are labelled for İstanbulkart. Check the charge for your payment method rather than assuming all methods cost the same. Resident concessions and transfer discounts should not be built into a visitor’s budget without checking eligibility. Official information ↗
On board and on the way back
Once aboard, give yourself permission to enjoy the crossing without trying to identify every building. A seat with a view is enough. Stay clear of boarding areas, let arriving passengers through and follow the crew’s directions when it is time to get off.
The return deserves a small amount of planning before you settle into lunch. Check the departure pier and last suitable service for the day you are travelling. A later boat to
Karaköy may not also serve Eminönü, and weekday, weekend and public-holiday notes can change your options. Keep the live timetable directory bookmarked rather than relying on a screenshot of an old schedule. Official information ↗

Accessibility and comfort
Şehir Hatları describes ramps, passenger information and designated spaces in its accessibility guidance. That is useful background, but it is not a journey-specific guarantee of step-free travel. Official information ↗
If you use a wheelchair, have difficulty with steps or need boarding assistance, confirm the departure pier, arrival pier and vessel arrangements with the operator before travelling. Ask specifically about the boarding ramp, access to seating and an accessible toilet if needed. Do not assume an upper deck will be reachable. The surrounding neighbourhood walk needs its own access check, particularly if you plan to continue uphill into Galata or explore uneven side streets.
A light extra layer is useful on the water. For stronger wind, fog or other disruption, check the operator’s service announcements before leaving: the company warns that weather and technical problems can delay or cancel sailings. Leave some flexibility around any appointment after the crossing. Official information ↗
The most rewarding first ride usually has a modest plan on either side: somewhere to begin, somewhere you want to explore, and enough room to enjoy the journey between them.
Opening times, admission and transport services can change. Check the linked official information before making a dedicated visit or booking.
