Introduction

Leave a little space in your bag for Istanbul. A novel, an exhibition catalogue or a book about the city can be a useful companion while you are here and something to return to afterwards. The question is where to look, especially if you read in English.

Start with the kind of book you want. Homer and Pandora are practical places to investigate English-language titles. Minoa suits a broader browse, with branches that fit several neighbourhood plans. Robinson Crusoe 389 works particularly well alongside a visit to Salt. For secondhand books and the atmosphere of the city’s bookselling trade, add the Sahaflar Çarşısı, with flexible expectations about language and stock.

A little preparation helps if you have a specific book in mind. Check the language and edition online, then ask the shop to confirm physical stock. If you are happy to discover something unexpected, choose a neighbourhood and give yourself time to browse.

Homer for a purposeful browse in Beyoğlu

Homer Kitabevi is an especially useful starting point if your sightseeing has left you with questions. Its catalogue includes archaeology, Byzantine studies, architecture, history and studies of Türkiye, alongside fiction, art and children’s books. English-language books appear across its listings, and its children’s sections are divided by language and age range. Official information ↗

That range gives you something concrete to ask about. You might want an accessible introduction to Byzantine Istanbul, a more substantial history, or a novel for the rest of your journey. Describe the level you are looking for as well as the subject. A specialist academic work and an engaging general introduction can sit under the same broad heading online.

Homer’s listed shop address is Yeni Çarşı Caddesi No. 52-1 in Tomtom, Beyoğlu. It fits a walk through the streets below İstiklal, although the slopes are worth keeping in mind if you have already spent the day walking. Official information ↗

For a particular title, send the ISBN or a clear edition reference in advance. The author’s name alone may lead to several translations, formats or languages. Ask explicitly whether the book is available at the shop and can be set aside for your visit.

Robinson Crusoe 389 is a natural companion to an exhibition visit. Salt’s current visitor information confirms bookshops in both Salt Beyoğlu, at İstiklal Caddesi 136, and Salt Galata, at Bankalar Caddesi 11. Official information ↗

Choose the location that fits the rest of your walk. Salt Beyoğlu makes sense while exploring İstiklal and its side streets. Salt Galata fits the streets around Bankalar Caddesi and the descent towards Karaköy. You do not need to visit both to make a worthwhile bookshop outing.

For readers interested in visual culture, the institution itself provides a useful starting point: look at the exhibition, note the artist or subject that interests you, then ask what related publications are available. Check the language inside the book rather than assuming an English title means the full text is English. Catalogues can be Turkish, English or bilingual, with different amounts of text in each language.

Check the current visitor page before setting off and confirm bookshop access if it is the sole reason for your trip.

Minoa for books across several neighbourhoods

Minoa began in Akaretler in 2014 as an independent bookstore and has since expanded to several locations. Its stated range takes in literature, art, photography, graphic design and children’s books, among other subjects. Official information ↗

For a visitor, the important choice is the branch. The current location list places Minoa Akaretler at Süleyman Seba Caddesi 52/A and Minoa Pera at Meşrutiyet Caddesi 99. Akaretler fits a Beşiktaş outing; Pera is convenient when you are already exploring Beyoğlu. Choose one rather than crossing the city simply to compare interiors. Official information ↗

Minoa is a useful option when you want to browse beyond a narrowly defined shopping list. Illustrated books and design publications can make particularly appealing keepsakes, but check the text language, weight and dimensions before you carry one to the till. A beautiful large-format book still needs to fit your luggage.

The business also combines books with other activities and spaces. If you want to attend a talk or reading, check the current programme separately, including its language and any booking requirements. A bookstore’s international selection does not establish that an event will take place in English.

Pandora for English-language books in Nişantaşı

Pandora’s Nişantaşı page gives an unusually practical answer to the English-language question. It explicitly discusses imported English books, special orders and reservations for items already in stock. Its listed address is Vali Konağı Caddesi No. 5, opposite the Military Museum entrance. Official information ↗

This makes Pandora a sensible first enquiry for a particular English-language novel or nonfiction title. The website also separates English-language listings from Turkish ones. Still, ask the shop to confirm the exact edition and physical availability before making a dedicated journey.

Special ordering is more useful for residents or a longer stay than for someone leaving shortly. Ask about timing before paying, and do not assume a book shown online can be collected immediately. If you are simply browsing, combine Pandora with a Nişantaşı walk and let the shelves determine the purchase.

Sahaflar Çarşısı for a different kind of book hunt

The Sahaflar Çarşısı sits between Beyazıt Mosque and the Grand Bazaar’s Fesçiler Gate, making it an easy addition to a visit to that part of the old city. It is a booksellers’ market rather than one shop with a single catalogue or opening policy.

Come with an interest in browsing rather than a promise to find a specific English paperback. Language, editions and condition vary from seller to seller. If something catches your eye, examine the title page and ask about missing pages, annotations or damage before buying. When a book is priced as a collectible, ask what makes that edition distinctive.

The stop is worthwhile even if you leave empty-handed. It gives you a different view of bookselling from the contemporary shops above, and it fits naturally into a day already spent around Beyazıt.

Make the bookshop fit your day

For a compact Beyoğlu outing, choose Homer and one Robinson Crusoe 389 location, adding Minoa Pera if you still want to browse. Give Pandora its place in a Nişantaşı afternoon, and visit Minoa Akaretler when you are around Beşiktaş. Keep Sahaflar for the old city.

A short list leaves room to read the first few pages, compare translations and ask a bookseller a proper question. That is often how you end up with the book you will actually finish.
